Thinking about visiting Zion Lutheran on a Sunday? Here’s some basic (and hopefully, helpful) information:
- We Worship on Saturdays at 4 pm and Sunday mornings at 8 am and 10:15 am (9:00 in the summer months).
- The 4 pm service is Piano liturgy. On the third Saturday of most months we include a healing liturgy (the laying on of hands and anointing with oil) as part of the 4 pm service. The 4pm service leaves room for contemplation and quietness.
- The 8 am service is a traditional Lutheran Liturgy service.
- The 10:15 am service is in many ways a different experience each Sunday. Most Sundays of the church year the congregation sings hymns and our choir sings once a month. Children of all ages are welcome on Sundays and people of all ages participate in all parts of the service. We always have a children’s time with the pastor, and most weeks there is an angel choir practice that takes places during the sermon for those 3-8 yrs. of age, as well as a handchime practice for those in grades 3-5. As diverse as the expressions are, each Sunday is grounded in the ancient forms of worship: prayer, the reading of scripture, and participation in the Eucharist.
- Almost all of our services include a celebration of The Holy Eucharist, or Communion. You do not need to be an Lutheran to receive Communion in our church—all of God’s children are welcome here. (If a child is receiving Communion, this continues. Instruction for First Communion is in the fourth grade. All are welcome at God’s Table for a blessing.)
- Near the middle of the service there is a sermon, typically given by our Pastor Jim. It’s generally 10-15 minutes in length, and is delivered in a conversational style (i.e. not read word-for-word) from the middle of the church aisle. You can listen to some recent sermons on this site.
- The 4 pm service is generally 50 minutes. The 8 am service is generally 60 minutes, and the 10:15 am service is generally an hour and fifteen minutes.
- There is a time for coffee, juice, and goodies between the services.
- Sunday School, for grades 8 and down, is held at 9 AM each week. This means children are welcome at the worship service. You may register your child for Sunday School by calling the office, or by just coming on Sunday morning and someone will help you get them registered and to their age-appropriate classroom.
- Our Middle School Youth are in a three-year confirmation class which meets most Sunday evenings from 6-7:30 pm. Please give us a call if you’d like to get your youth involved in this wonderful program.
- Almost all of the words of the entire service are printed in our bulletin, so you don’t have to be worried about getting lost.
- Zion is a wonderful, friendly, and down-to-earth congregation that loves to be together, worship together, and have a good time together with the whole family.
